Dawn Of The Dead

Zack Snyder
USA
2002
Making a remake of what is pretty universally recognised as one of the greatest horror movies and definitely the best zombie movie ever made is an incredible challenge to pick up and this could have turned out to be an absolute disaster, but against the odds Zack Snyder has created a modern zombie masterpiece. As both a horror movie and a zombie movie this movie excels in every area. The story is very similar to the original with an unexplained zombie epidemic laying waste to society in a very short period of time, a group of survivors hold up in a mall and await rescue from the authorities. The cast are terrific and the story has been updated with an eye towards the modern cinema goer with fast moving zombies for a terrifyingly immediate threat. Cameos from the original cast are very welcome and Ken Foree redoing his "when there is no more room in hell" speech is a great touch. Also look out for Tom Savini as a bad ass sheriff kicking some zombie butt, this movie was made by people with a knowledge and respect of the originals place in cinema history. The character development and relationships between them are well realised with all the tensions you would expect from a wide ranging mix of personalities being thrown together. You have the hard man cop, a gang member, a nurse, a rich playboy and his girlfriend, a tv salesman, the malls security team and a few hicks thrown in. This has all the shootings bludgeoning's and biting's you would expect with added splatter from the chainsaw massacre towards the end of the film. I really didn't want this film to end and when it does you are left wanting more and i would have loved a sequel to this one but it never appeared, if only all remakes were even half as good as this then I would be a very happy fan. I saw this In an early preview midnight showing at my local cinema and then went back again a few days later to see it again, the directors cut is a welcome addition with added gore scenes and a few interesting dialogue additions. What more can I say? this film is awesome and one of my favourite zombie films, check it out |
