LAND OF THE DEAD
George A Romero
2005

When land of the dead was first announced, fans worldwide were excited about the prospect of another addition to the zombie genre by
the undoubted master, here was a film to bring the story foreword again with a decent budget and known actors. After release
there has been a lot of negative feedback about the movie, its plot and general characterisation .Here's my take on the whole affair
Zombies have taken over the world and have all but wiped out the human populace. Those who still survive stay in a city they have made a stronghold, with the rich living in an exclusive tower block and the poor left in slums far below. But trouble is coming as the zombies seem to be getting smarter and the rich fight to keep control over the repressed majority. This movie has taken a lot of stick, most reviews I read don't have much positive to say about it. I really didn't hold out any hope for this film after watching a trailer, it seemed too far removed from the other movies to work, thinking zombies?...no way it cant work...can it?. Well yes I think it does work to a certain degree. I mean ok, its not the best zombie movie ever made, far from it, but its not nearly as bad as some people make out. Romero created this genre and has proven that he could take it to places nobody else could, he seems to be trying to push it in another direction, one that I don't really want it to go in but one he manages to pull off. I really hated the idea of thinking zombies, anyone who loves the brainless hordes from the other movies may agree, but after making those three classics you can hardly blame him for trying to add a new dimension to the whole thing. It certainly hits the mark in the gore stakes with outrageously gory and bloody effects which hint at the increase in budget but also lack the gritty realism of the earlier films splatter . This film also doesn't feel as dark and depressing as the other films, its actually quite optimistic, which is also a negative to my way of thinking. Still, after saying all that I really did enjoy this film. It feels like the closing chapter in Romero's zombie legacy, and a fitting closure on the best series of zombie movies there are, I hope he proves me wrong mind you. |
