Zeder

Pupi Avati

1983

A writer is given an old typewriter as an anniversary present and when he checks the old ink ribbon discovers what was written on it previously. Unwinding the old ribbon he reads about "k zones", locations on earth that are not governed by our laws of space and time, effectively existing in zero time. In these zones the dead can come back to life and terrorise the living. And so the writer embarks on a journey to discover the true meaning of what he found. Shadowy forces are also intent on stopping anyone finding out about the secrets of the "k zones".

This film has creepy music, a great storyline and the cool Italian 80's horror vibe but it does run out of steam in the middle of the movie before picking up again towards the end. The zombies are well done and very atmospheric and unnerving. This is certainly not your typical zombie gorefest but much more a thinking mans horror movie with the writer traveling all over the place following up leads. Its as much a spooky mystery story as a true horror.

So this one is very much worth checking out if you fancy something with a more interesting storyline than your average zombie or slasher movie.

Its not a gory film at all with very little violence or gore and only a few murders, most violence is off screen with dead bodies showing up afterwards. This film really lives or dies on its great spooky atmosphere, which really is the movies strong point.

All in all not a classic but a really enjoyable entry in the italian zombie genre
